What happens if a groom is younger than the bride?
In any relationship, one partner is likely to be older than the other. This is normal, and generally harmless as long as the age range isn’t severe enough to make the relationship unethical (such as if one person is too young to consent or to understand the full implications, or if the age difference skews the power balance) or to create misunderstandings (such as if the partners are from different generations and grew up with vastly different ideas, experiences, and expectations because of it).
If the groom is the younger partner, as he was in my own situation, then depending on the expectations of the surrounding culture, this could either be a non-issue, or it could create mild social awkwardness when the neighbors ask about it. If age is heavily associated with authority within the context of a culture that is also patriarchal, then you might have to figure out together whether the woman’s age or the man’s gender will put one of you in an unwanted leadership/follower role, and negotiate accordingly to ensure that neither of you is going to be either burdened with too much responsibility or subservient to the point of feeling disrespected. Figure out the power structure of the relationship, and decide if it is something you are okay with.
In my case, I’m a feminist who married a fellow feminist who is a few years younger than I am. We don’t place responsibilities on each other based on gender or age, but we still have specific roles and expectations based on things like areas of aptitude and experience. Age can sometimes have an impact on experience.
If you are compatible in every other way, it probably isn’t worth too much concern. Marry the person you consider right for you. If you respect each other and communicate well, you will likely be able to resolve any difficulties that might stem from it.
